Commoning amidst Disasters and Dysfunctional States: Actors and Governance of the Urban Recovery of Beirut

On June 16, 2023, Mona Harb gave a presentation at the Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU)’s Dialogues in Development event titled “Commoning amidst Disasters and Dysfunctional States: Actors and Governance of the Urban Recovery of Beirut” at University College London. The presentation chronicled the organizational response to the Beirut Port blast, mapping the diverse set of actors who responded to the Beirut Port blast, examining their profiles, modes of operation, collaborations and the range of goods and services they provided. Harb’s presentation was based on a study co-led by the Beirut Urban Lab (BUL) and The Policy Initiative (TPI) teams. The presentation was concluded with reflections on the productive, yet contingent, role of organized groups in advancing commoning in the gloomy context of disaster governance and dysfunctional states.
