Investigations in the Urban Citizenship theme explore how various individuals who dwell, work, navigate and live in cities are active agents making claims over their rights to the city that transcend the formal, rigid boundaries of national citizenry. The theme also investigates how claims for rights (e.g. housing, heritage protection, public space, the coast, clean air, etc.) get organized into more-or-less formal collective groups and movements that advocate for just, inclusive and viable cities and environments, how organized groups mobilize different repertoires of action, as well as a range of planning and critical cartography tools, to advance their goals, and under what conditions they may decide to engage in political action and elections. As such, urban citizenship also incorporates the study of the multiple crafting processes of urban politics.
